Obituary of Margaret Louise Sniffin

Margaret L. “Peggy” Sniffin passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024 in  Bethel, CT.   She was born April 9, 1931 in Syracuse,  NY to the late Francis and Susan Hanifan.   She graduated from St. Vincent de Paul  in 1949, and married Richard C. Sniffin on Oct. 4, 1952.   They had the first four of their seven children in Syracuse before moving to Danbury, CT.  Peggy was proud to be secretary to the president of Dey Department Store, where her shorthand skills were put to good use.   After moving to Danbury, she  was a secretary at American Cyanamid in Danbury for several years before remaining home to raise her children.  They were longtime parishioners of St. Gregory the Great in Danbury.

Peggy’s greatest joy was her family, and she was a devoted mother and grandmother.  Her favorite times were when the family was all together celebrating holidays and birthdays. She was an advocate for children with special needs, and was a volunteer for DATAHR.  She also loved  volunteering as a “lunch lady” at St. Gregory’s. Peggy enjoyed crafts and reading.  Peggy and Dick enjoyed summer vacations in Wells Beach, Maine.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Richard C. Sniffin, son Matthew, and grandsons Christopher and Andrew.  She is survived by her children: Dennis, David, Daniel, Patrick (Katherin), Mary Beth (Paul Finnerty) and Carol (John Martino); and beloved grandchildren Brian, Trevor (Erin), Thomas, Robert, Megan Vo (Eric), Emily Michalek (Ryan), Ryan Finnerty, Connor Finnerty, CJ Martino (Lorin), and Stephanie Wenchell (Harrison).  She is also survived by great grandchildren Declan, Ronan,  Greyson and Autumn.  She is  predeceased by her 5 siblings, Jack, Bill, Mary Jane, Ginny and Tom.

Peggy’s loving, gentle nature and big smile will be missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to express profound gratitude for the exceptional, compassionate care Peggy received at Maplewood at Stony Hill over the past 6 years.
