Obituary of Pastor John Adam

Pastor John Adam December 04, 1928 - October 27, 2005 Pastor John Adam, of Kingswood Road, Danbury, devoted husband of Dorothy (Majzlik) Adam, entered the Church Triumphant on Thursday, October 27th at Danbury Hospital. He was born in North Braddock, Pennsylvania on December 4, 1928, son of the late John and Anna (Durovcik) Adam. He received an honorary Doctorate from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania, as well as from the Seminary in Bratislava, Slovakia. Before attending Muhlenberg College, he taught Sunday School at Holy Trinity Church in East Pittsburgh, PA, and also served on its Church Council. He graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and was ordained on June 3, 1958. He married his cherished wife on June 14, 1958. Upon ordination he was the Pastor of Dr. Martin Luther Church in Muskegon, MI, and served there until 1969. During his ministry in Muskegon, the congregation built a new church. He then received a call to become Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Danbury where he served from 1969 until 1981. In 1981, he was elected Bishop of the Slovak Zion Synod, one of 67 synods within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). He held various offices in the Slovak Zion Synod. He also acted as an interpreter for Eastern European Immigrants and would often accompany them to get their drivers license. In addition to his service at St. Paul's, he shared his ministry in the Danbury area through monthly Sermons on WLAD. He was a member of Thrivant, a Lutheran fraternal organization, and the Sokol Lodge in Danbury. Upon retirement in 1991, Pastor Adam was requested to serve three years as an Interim Pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Butler, PA. During the past two years he held services for recent Slovak immigrants, in their language, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byram, CT. A devoted family man, Pastor Adam will be sadly missed by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy; his two sons, Paul Michael Adam and his wife, Heidi of Danbury and Stephen Robert Adam and his wife Joanne of Bristol; and his seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Ann Hredzak of Monroeville, PA. and Suzanna Miller of Irwin, PA.; his brother, Michael Daniel Adam of Pittsburgh, PA; his sister-in-law and her husband, Ruth and Alfred Caracciolo; brother-in-law, Daniel Andrew Mazlik; and his stepbrother-in-law, William Kitchka and his wife, Emily, of Muskegon, MI; as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves the membership of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was predeceased by his son, John Andrew Adam; and his sister, Anna Adam. Funeral Information Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Danbury on Wednesday, November 2nd at 11:00am. Burial in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury on Tuesday, November 1st between the hours of 2:00 - 4:00pm and 6:00 - 8:00pm.
