Obituary of Martin A. Coffey

Martin A. Coffey April 23, 1930 - January 05, 2009 Martin A. "Sam" Coffey, Jr., husband of the late Marie (Negri) Coffey, passed away on Monday, January 5th at his home, surrounded by his children, after a long illness. His strength and determination throughout his illness was an inspiration to everyone he knew. He was the son of the late Martin A, Sr., and Helen (Johnson) Coffey. Sam was a Corporal in the United States Army, serving as a Medic in the 963rd FA Battalion from 1950 until 1952. He retired from the Danbury News Times several years ago, but continued to work part-time. Sam is survived by his five children, Martin J. Coffey and his wife, Virginia of Danbury, Donna Wildman and her husband, Trevor of Danbury, Laurie Cruess and her husband, Michael of Cheshire, Karen Tomasini and her husband, Gary of Danbury, and Glory Bennette and her husband, John of Melbourne, FL. He also leaves four sisters, Elizabeth Christie of NY, Kathryn Bates of Bethel, Dorothy Freer of Ridgefield, and Joan Coffey of Bethel; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his two brothers-in-law, James and Richard Negri. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 9th at 10:00am at St. Joseph Church, Danbury. Entombment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Thursday evening between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00pm. Sam's family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Abrams and Staff, and the staff of Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, especially Gerard, for his compassionate care.
