Obituary of Thomas D. Murphy

Thomas D. Murphy Jr. September 29, 1925 - January 27, 2010 Thomas D. Murphy, Jr., age 84, formerly of Brookfield, beloved husband of Sally Gay (Dalton) Murphy, died peacefully at Danbury Hospital on Wednesday, January 27th. He was born in Brookfield on September 29, 1925, son of the late Thomas D. and Josephine (Lynch) Murphy. He was a graduate of Danbury High School and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Brookfield for more than 30 years. Mr. Murphy was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving as Master Sergeant in the United States Army. He later worked as the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the Town of Brookfield. An active member of the Brookfield community, he was often referred to as "Mr. Brookfield," and was loved for his generosity and willingness to help whenever needed. He was a longtime member of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Co and was Fire Chief from 1960-64. He also served as a member of the Brookfield Democratic Town Committee, the Board of Selectmen from 1971-77, the Board of Tax Review from 1965-73, and was Fire Marshall for many years. Thomas had a great love of the outdoors. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed many years of retirement with Sally, at their home and camp in Maine. In addition to his cherished wife of 60 years, Sally, he will be sadly missed by his six children, Linda Williams of Litchfield, Sharon Pacific and her husband, James of Brookfield, Colleen Martone and her husband, Glenn of Roxbury, Nancy Verville and her husband Leonard of Maine, Michael Murphy and his wife, Robin of Brookfield, and Robert Murphy of Maine; his nine grandchildren, Joseph, Kellie, Thomas, Christopher, Nicholas, Christine, Danny, Erin and Shane; and four great grandchildren, Taylor, Avery, Gabriel, and Oakleigh. He is also survived by his six sisters, Mary Manning, Rita Donahue, Joan Soules, Alice Ellis, Eileen Pautz, and Betty Bissonette; as well as 39 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Boice. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 29th at 11:00am at St. Joseph Church in Brookfield. Burial will be in the spring in St. Patrick Cemetery, Roxbury. There are no calling hours.
