Obituary of John L. Martino

John L. Martino Sr. August 28, 1930 - February 01, 2005 John L. Martino, Sr., 74, of Candlewood Lake Road, Brookfield, devoted husband of Angeline (Mazzoli) Martino, died at Danbury Hospital surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 1st . He was born in Port Chester, NY, on August 28, 1930, son of the late Antonio and Elizabeth (Losito) Martino. He was a graduate of Henry Abbott Technical School. Mr. Martino was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the United States Army. He was a master carpenter and building contractor, co-owning and operating Martino Brothers with his brother Philip for more than forty years. He also owned and operated Johnny's Cabinets on North Street in Danbury from 1975 until 1995. Mr. Martino moved from Harrison, New York to Brookfield in the late 1930's. An active member of the Brookfield community, Mr. Martino was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church for more than 50 years. He served as a Police Commissioner for the town of Brookfield for 27 years, was a member of the Board of Selectman from 1965 until 1967, and served on the building committees for Huckleberry Hill School, Whisconier School and Brookfield High School. He also served on numerous town boards and commissions and the Democratic Town Committee. He enjoyed active membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans, and the Catholic War Veterans Post 1042 where he was a past Commander of the Post. Mr. Martino was devoted to his faith, his family, his friends, and his community. He had a special gift with children. They were drawn to him with his calm and loving demeanor. Some of his happiest moments were holding infants and toddlers in his arms sitting in his rocker until they fell asleep. He loved gardening, wood working and could always be found in his shop at home working on a project. Tools were his toys. And, Sunday dinners at home with Angie, his sons, their wives, and his grandchildren were cherished. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Angeline, he will be dearly missed by his two sons, John L. Martino, Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline of Brookfield, Richard J. Martino and his wife Pamela of Brookfield; His four grandchildren, Meredith, Melissa, Mallory and Melinda Martino. He is also survived by his loving sister Lucy Gillotti and her husband Joseph of Danbury, his many loving brothers and sisters-in law, nieces and nephews, and his dear friend and "brother" Steve Mancini and his wife June of Danbury. He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 5th at 9:00am at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Friday, February 4th between the hours of 2:00 - 4:00pm and 6:00 until 9:00pm. The Korean War Veterans will be conducting a service at 7:00pm Donations Information Memorial Contributions in his memory may be made to the Catholic War Veterans Post 1042, Shalvoy Lane, Danbury, CT. 06810, to benefit the Scholarship Fund.
