Obituary of John Layok

John Layok February 08, 1915 - December 16, 2006 John Layok, owner and operator of Layok's IGA Food Market for more than thirty years, died on Saturday, December 16th at the age of 91. John was born in Crabtree, Pennsylvania on February 8, 1915. He was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Rhobak) Layok. In his earlier years, Mr. Layok worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania until he and his father, two brothers and five sisters moved to Danbury. Soon after living in Danbury for several years, he and his brothers joined the Armed Forces in order to serve their country in World War II. He was a decorated veteran who served in the 10th Tank Battalion 5th Armored Division in the European Campaign. After serving in the Army, Mr. Layok was honorably discharged, returned to Danbury and married the love of his life, Mary Surovy. Mr. Layok was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Danbury; a member of the American Legion Post #60; the VFW Post #149; Sokols Lodge #30 for more than 55 years, and the Phoenix Hose Co. #8 of Danbury. Besides his constant dedication to his family, Mr. Layok enjoyed golfing, fishing, and boating. Mr. Layok is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary; his two sons, John E. and his wife, Hilda of East Hampton, Robert J. and his wife, Charlene of Danbury; two grandsons, Gregory Layok of Chicago and Jason Layok of Danbury; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lee Highfield and her husband Kevin of Las Vegas, Nevada and Emily Layok of East Hampton. He is also survived by his two brothers, Edward Layok of Danbury and Lewis Layok of New Fairfield; his two sisters, Elaine Symonovich of New Fairfield and Ann Seidl of New York; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters: Agnes Gillotti, Jenny Brush and Mary Ukers. Mr. Layok will be missed by all those that have been enriched by his warmth, humor and genuine concern for all the people he has had contact with over the years. Funeral Information Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 20th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 10:00am. Interment in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Tuesday, December 19th from 4:00 - 7:00pm.
