Obituary of Alfrado Osborne

Alfrado “Ossie” Charles Osborne Jr., 91, of Southbury, beloved husband of Beverly (MacPherson) Osborne, died at the Lutheran Home on Tuesday, January 5th.  He was born in Danbury on March 2, 1929, son of the late Alfrado Charles Osborne Sr. and Mildred (Barry) Osborne.  He was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1947. Ossie owned and operated Ossie’s Bar and Grill on South Street in Danbury for 30 years. Ossie’s offered many specialties loved by patrons including Chili on Thursdays, the infamous “Wally Burger” and colossal ham and cheese sandwiches.

Oz’s amazing love story with Bev began their sophomore year at Danbury High School in 1945.  They were married on September 3, 1949 at St. Joseph Church in Danbury and renewed their vows in 1999 while celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in Europe on board the Norwegian Sky Cruise Ship. They enjoyed so many years together while living in Danbury, Cape Cod, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and The Villages in Florida, and Southbury. He was a great husband and father who loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He played sports with the former Morris Street and Main Street school teams before playing basketball and baseball at Danbury High. He was a power hitting first baseman when the City Baseball League was at the height of its popularity.  He played baseball with Lee-Disney and Seaman-Lynch and was also a standout softball player with Gillotti’s and Barden.  He also played at the former Catholic Club gymnasium on Library Place and in the Industrial basketball league.  In addition to basketball, baseball and softball, he was also an amateur boxer.  He sponsored numerous “Ossie’s” basketball and softball teams for many years.  He was inducted into the Danbury Old Timers Athletic Association in 1993. He led a march to bring back student day at the Great Danbury State Fair. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.

Ossie will be greatly missed by his high school sweetheart and wife of 71 years, Beverly, and by his three sons, Alfrado (“Skip”) Charles Osborne III and his wife Sheila, Gary Osborne and his wife Karen, and David Osborne and his wife Kathy; his four grandchildren, Jessie McHeffey and her husband Brendan, Nicole Osborne, Kendra Bwinika and her husband Danny, and Quinn Osborne; and four great-grandchildren, Maddie, Noah, Adonai and Nova.  He was predeceased by his daughter, Deborah Osborne. In addition to his family, Ossie had numerous friends who knew of his huge heart and willingness to help anyone in need.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Peter Cemetery.

Due to the current pandemic restrictions, the family will plan a Memorial Mass at a later date.
