Obituary of John James Gereg, Sr.
September 7th, 1936 – August 22nd, 2018
John J. Gereg Sr. died peacefully surrounded by loving family on August 22nd. He was born in Danbury, CT on Sept. 7th, 1936, son of John Gereg II and Elizabeth R. Gereg.
He is survived by his son John Gereg IV, daughter Lisa Gereg and her partner Timothy Edwards, four grandchildren John V, Michael, Anthony, and Nicole, and his godson John David. He is also survived by his sister Pat Novicky, his sisters-in law Betty Hinckley, Karen Trowbridge, Susan Quartiero, brother- in law James Anderson and sister-in-law Fran Anderson. He had many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Linda Gereg, son Ronald Gereg, brother Theodore Gereg, brother-in-law Robert Hinckley, and loving companion Marie Nixon.
John married his sweetheart Linda Anderson in 1960 and they moved to Danbury to start raising their family. In 1968 they moved back to Brookfield where they spent the remainder of their lives. He was devoted to his marriage, family, career, and the church.
John’s work career included almost 40 years at Davis and Geck in Danbury where he was the print shop supervisor. He was well loved by his employees and co-workers and known for his caring character and creative solutions to create a safer more enjoyable workplace. John was also in the Army reserves for 5 years where he served as an instructor and was a proud member of the American Legion until he passed. After retiring from Davis and Geck, he enjoyed having a second career as a postal carrier for the USPS in Brookfield.
In addition to being devoted to his family and career, he was an avid bowler, golfer, and horseshoe player. He belonged to the Bertilson’s Men’s Memorial Bowling League, Bethel Golf League, the Greater Danbury Horseshoe Club. He is the owner of three perfect games in bowling and the recipient of several league championships and awards. He was inducted into the Danbury Horseshoe Hall of Fame in 2014.
He was a sports fan and loved the Cleveland Indians, NFL Football, NASCAR, and the Danbury RaceArena. He loved to socialize, play cards and games, and to travel. He was able to visit Europe, South and Central America, the Caribbean, and almost 40 states. He traveled throughout the country for the ABC National bowling tournaments for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of St Joseph’s Church and enjoyed the activities at the Brookfield Senior Center with his friends.
John extended a helping hand whenever needed and was known for his energy, generosity, dry humor, and creative mechanical aptitude. A kid at heart his entire life, he was always tinkering and never idle. He inspired people to be better, set the best example, and was a true gentleman. He will be missed for his exceptionally kind heart and his love for life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 27th at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Church, 163 Whisconier Rd., Brookfield. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home at 786 Federal Rd., Brookfield from 4:00 PM to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday August 26th.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church in Brookfield.
