Obituary of William Hull Houser, Jr.
William Hull Houser, age 75, known to friends as “Bill”, passed away on Monday, July 23th at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Scranton, PA on February 21, 1943, son of the late William Sr. and Doris A. (Boston) Houser. He was a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus through St. Joseph Church, both in Danbury.
Bill was a proud graduate of Penn State University where he met his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann (Yedinak) through their joint involvement in the service societies Alpha Phi Omega (Bill) and Gamma Sigma Sigma (Mary Ann). He continued to support his alma mater as a recruiting volunteer with the alumni association.
Bill spent 34 years of his professional career as a corporate tax accountant with IBM and continued after retirement with Jackson-Hewitt in Danbury. He was a member of the New York/Connecticut Association of Tax Professionals, Inc., regularly attending their educational seminars.
The Boy Scouts was an important part of Bill’s life. He started as a scout and continued his commitment to the organization as a Scout Leader, holding many positions within the organization. He recently retired from Troop 9 at St. Gregory the Great Church after many years of service. He also enjoyed volunteering for the Dorothy Day Hospitality House.
Additionally, his interests included reading fiction, calculating anything that could be turned into a statistic, and tax law.
In addition to his cherished wife, Mary Ann, he will be sadly missed by his children; daughter Karen Johnston (Kevin), sons Kevin (Sharon Shen), Jeffry (Tammi), and David Houser; his four grandchildren, Kurtis and Karli Johnston, August and Leonardo Houser. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his brothers C. Richard Houser (Peg), Jack Houser, his sisters Holly Martin (Ken), Megan Jurbala (Steve), his half-sisters Kelly Hathcock, Ruth Monahan, his sister-in-law Linda Yedinak-Meyers (Kurt) and many nieces and nephews. The happy and caring way that Bill interacted with others will be deeply missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 3rd at 11:00 am at St. Gregory the Great Church. Burial will be held privately in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Thursday, between the hours of 5:00-7:00 pm.
Memorial Contributions in his memory may be made to Boy Scout Troop 9 or to St. Gregory the Great Church, both of Danbury, CT.
