Obituary of Msgr. John Hossan

Reverend Monsignor John Hossan, of Stamford, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at his residence at Queen of the Clergy in Stamford.  He was born in Danbury on August 21, 1927, son of the late John and Florence (Culligan) Hossan.  He was a graduate of St. Joseph School and Danbury High School, Class of 1945.  He attended University of Notre Dame, St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, and St. John Seminary in Brighton, MA. 

 

Msgr. Hossan was ordained at St. Joseph Church in Danbury in September of 1953 and was appointed a Monsignor in 1997.  He devoted his career to counseling others and served in numerous educational and leadership positions where he touched the lives of countless people.  He was instrumental in the founding of Immaculate High School and served as the school's first principal for 11 years.  He was also the founding pastor of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church in Brookfield.  He continued his leadership as pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Redding Ridge in 1990.  He also served as the first director of the Diocesan Permanent Diaconate Program for the Diocese of Bridgeport and was a past Provincial House Chaplain for the Congregation of Notre Dame in Ridgefield.

 

He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Gladys Hossan of Southbury and Marylen Hossan of Southington; his brother-in-law, Crispino Lombardi of Tequesta, FL.   He had sixteen nieces and nephews; and twelve great nieces and nephews. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Robert Hossan; his sisters, Florence Hossan, Elizabeth Lombardi, Mary Broderick; and his brother-in-law, Robert Broderick. 

 

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to his close friends, Sr. Peggy Doyle and Rosemary Bouffard for their years of devoted care giving and to Vickey Hickey and her staff at Queen of the Clergy for going above and beyond to make his final months comfortable.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Frank Caggiano at 11:00am on Friday, May 11, 2018 at St. Joseph Church in Danbury.  Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.  

 

Visitation will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Thursday, May 10th between the hours of 4:00 - 7:00pm. 

 

A second visitation will be on Friday morning, at St. Joseph Church between 9:30-10:30am.    

In appreciation for his devotion to Immaculate, the school family was looking forward to surprising Monsignor with their plans for a major chapel renovation which would named in his honor, as the Monsignor Hossan Chapel.
