Obituary of Victor Gustav Westman
Victor Westman, 85, lifelong Danbury resident, died at his home on February 28, 2018. He was born on March 7, 1932, son of the late Victor and Edith (Sutton) Westman. He was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1950.
Vic worked as a locomotive engineer on the Southeast to Grand Central Station Harlem Line, retiring after 35 years. He was a railroad historian and enjoyed membership in the National Railroad Historical Society, and the Railroad Locomotive Historical Society. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Danbury Railway Museum. He was also a member of the Danbury and New Fairfield Historical Society, and loved sharing his knowledge of local history.
A self taught artist, he spent time painting with the Student Art League of New York and was a member of the Hudson Valley Art Association and the American Artist Professional League. His works have been displayed at the Salmagundi Club, Student Art League, Grand Central Station, The World Trade Center, and various other locations in NYC and Westchester County.
His illustrations have appeared in Railroad Magazine, and he illustrated the book jacket for The Putnam Division by Daniel Gallo and Frederick Kramer. Though the bulk of his paintings were done in his younger years, he continued to do ink sketches of various subjects until his passing.
Vic also had a keen interest in opera and loved reading from his eclectic collections of books and magazines. Vic enjoyed working on his land and was active in many conservation efforts. He was a member of the Candlewood Valley Regional Land Trust.
He will be sadly missed by his sister, Elizabeth Westman.
Friends are invited to gather at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Friday, March 16th between the hours of 12:00pm – 2:00pm.
