Obituary of Adelaide Morgan Marek

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Adelaide M. Marek, 86, of Brookfield, on October 27, 2016 surrounded by her family.  Adelaide was born in NY, NY on August 27, 1930.  She was the daughter of the late Colonel Joseph W. and Georgina (Dougherty) Morgan.

Adelaide’s greatest joy was her family.  She was pre-deceased by her husband William J. who died in 1989 and her daughter Elizabeth who died in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.  She is survived by her children Adelaide (US Army veteran) Danbury, William (Raul) New York, NY, Georgina (Kenny) Patterson, NY, Peter (US Marine veteran) Rockville, RI and Theresa (Shawn) Brookfield, and her cherished grandchildren Maddy, Billy, Mark and Melissa.   She is also survived by her brother Bruce J. Morgan (Miriam) Mt. Prospect, IL, her sister-in-law Jeanne Ferri, New Hyde Park, NY and brother-in-law Robert Marek, Astoria, NY and many wonderful nieces and nephews.  As her niece remembered “through all the ups and downs she kept going and never lost her devotion to her family and all that is good in the world.   I think that she always believed in the best side of human nature.”

On September 11, 1954 Adelaide married her 1st (and only) husband and they resided in Mineola, NY before settling in Brookfield, in 1968 with their 6 children.

As a lifelong Democrat, she was very involved in her hometown of Brookfield as the elected Democratic Registrar of Voters from 1978 to 1998.  She was a member of the Brookfield Board of Education and a Justice of the Peace.  Previous to these positions she was a part-time mail carrier and part-time journalist for the Brookfield Journal and the Newtown Bee.  She began her career as an Executive Secretary for Pfizer where her best friend eventually became her sister-in-law.

Her love of her family and history fueled her passion for genealogy and she remained a member of the Brookfield Historical Society until her death.

In 1988, upon the death of her daughter she became a strong advocate for justice.  She served on The Board of the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 and lobbied both the US and British governments for the improvement of airline security.

Her family would like to thank the staff of the Village at Brookfield Common for all their care and kindness and the professionalism and compassion of the paramedics and staff of Danbury Hospital.  A special thank you to Adelaide’s friend, PK of Scotland for his longtime friendship and pastoral support.

In lieu of flowers, VOTE.
