Obituary of Harold D. Hancock

Harold D. "Porky" Hancock Sr. March 11, 1931 - October 04, 2004 Harold D. "Porky" Hancock, Sr., of Germantown Road, Danbury, devoted husband of Ona-May (Gavagan) Hancock, died on Monday, October 4th at the age of 73. He was born in Danbury on March 11, 1931, son of the late George P. and Elouise (Verra) Hancock. He was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1950. Hal was an avid football player. He played Danbury High Varsity Football and was Captain in his Junior and Senior years. He was selected for All State in 1950. He later went on to play Semi-pro football with the Danbury Top Hat Bulldogs and enjoyed boxing for the Danbury Boxing Club at the YMCA. He served in the Connecticut National Guard. Hal was a meat cutter for several area markets and later at Fairfield Hills Hospital. Following the closing of the Meat Department he worked in Ground Maintenance until his retirement in 1989 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Connecticut State Employee Association (CSEA). He also was the business manager of Ona-May School of Dance. He served on the Democratic Town Committee in the 1960's. The father of five boys, he was one of the founders of the Danbury Pop Warner Football League and coached the Danbury Vikings Midget Team for them for many years. He also coached baseball for the Danbury Brewster Lumber Little League Team. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In addition to his wife of 49 years, Ona-May, he will be sadly missed by his sons, Harold D. Jr., of Danbury; Jim and his wife Lori, of Danbury, Brian and his wife Joy of Port St. Lucie, Fla; Gary and his wife, Susan, Roger and his wife, Diane, all of Danbury; his cherished daughter, Alice Flynn and her husband, Dan of Danbury; his twelve grandchildren, Bethani, James, Kristin, Teri, Desiree, Parker, Dean, Dylan, Tyler, Devinne, and Jacob Hancock, and Julia Flynn; his five great grandchildren, Kaylee, Roland, Kamryn, Jayden, and Katrina. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Hancock of Sherman, and Jack Hancock of Danbury; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Dick, Phil and Don Hancock. Funeral Information Funeral Services will be at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Thursday, October 7th at 7:30pm. Mr. Ray Tinsley will speak. The family will receive friends on Thursday between the hours of 5 and 8:00pm.
