Obituary of William F. Volz

William F. Volz April 13, 1913 - June 06, 2004 William Francis Volz, 91, of Haley Street, Danbury, devoted husband of Elizabeth "Marie" Volz, died at Danbury Hospital on Sunday, June 6th. He was born in the Bronx, New York, on April 13, 1913, son of the late William and Loretta (Heckman) Volz. He was educated in the Bronx. Mr. Volz joined the New York City Fire Department in 1936, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1941, Captain in 1948, Battalion Chief in 1953, and retired as Deputy Chief in 1959. He enjoyed playing baseball with the fire department and was also delegate for the 15th Battalion in the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. In 1965 Bill and his family made their home in Danbury. He worked for Danbury Printing and Litho as supervisor of Computer Typesetting for sixteen years. He then joined his son, William, at Meadowland Chrysler in Carmel, NY., where he worked as a salesman. His many hobbies included baseball, golf, fishing, clamming, woodworking, gardening, and oil painting. He was a past president of the Holy Name Society in the Bronx, and was past Grand Commander of the Order of Alhambra. Bill was Trustee for St. Gregory the Great Church, a member of their Advisory Board, and enjoyed being active in the St. Gregory Players. He was a member of the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department, and Drill Master for Danbury Volunteer Fire Companies for several years. In 2003 Bill and his wife celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary. In addition to his wife, Marie, he is survived by his son, Robert Volz and his wife, Linda of Brookfield; his daughter, Anne Higgins of Washington DC; daughter-in-law, Barbara Volz of Ridgefield; five grandchildren, Jennifer Sheppard, Kenneth, Kristin, Andrew, and Daniel Volz. He is also survived by a great granddaughter, Hailey Alexandra Sheppard; his sister, Lillian Emmerson of Cresskill, NJ.; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, William Volz. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 10th, 10:00am, at St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Road, Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Wednesday, June 9th between the hours of 5 and 8pm.
