Obituary of Hugh Louis Carolan


Hugh L. Carolan of Brookfield, CT, passed away gently on October 16, 2017, after a long illness.  His family were with him during his final day on earth.  He is survived by his beloved wife Alice and his three children, Moira and her husband Kevin Brooks, Matt and his wife Gina and their daughter McKenna, and Anne and her husband Mike Cioffi and their children Michael and Jennifer.  He was predeceased by his wife Carol and their son Hugh, Jr.  He is also survived by Hugh, Jr’s children Erin and her husband Jim Botelho and Megan and her husband Brian Brown and their son Brody, and his step son Patrick Tufts and his daughters Zoe, Cleo and Nisa.  Hugh was born in the Bronx, NY, in 1927, the only child of Selma and Hugh Carolan.


Hugh graduated from Regis High School in Manhattan, served in the Army in the Panama Canal Zone for two years, and graduated from Fordham University with a degree in business and philosophy. 


He spent his working career with Union Carbide’s corporate headquarters in New York City and then in Danbury.  He served in a variety of administrative roles, eventually becoming director of human resources.  He helped coordinate Carbide’s move to Danbury in the early 1980’s.


Hugh was a board member for Connecticut’s Commission on Human Rights and for the Early Learning Center and the Interfaith AIDs Ministry in Danbury.  He loved Brookfield and was on the Municipal Building Committee, the Water Pollution Control Committee and an early planning committee for a new library.
In keeping with Hugh’s wishes, a private family memorial service was held at the Brookfield Funeral Home.  


Hugh was an avid reader and loved learning.  Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in his memory are asked to consider a donation to the New Library Fund ℅ Brookfield Library, 182 Whisconier Road, Brookfield, CT 06804.


The family wishes to thank the remarkable staff at Maplewood at Stony Hill for the care, comfort and friendship they provided Hugh for the past two years and for Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut who offered so much support and compassion during Hugh’s final days.
